Homework
How is motherhood presented in any two or three stories in the collection?
Tanjong rhu

In this story, is the relation between Mr li and his mother. Mr li's mother depended on him. As motherhood, her son offered her glasses. It's a sign or inherent worthiness, justiness or goodness that is obvious. Her sufferings is somehow wanted to be eased by her son.

The Move

It is the essence of Madam Teo's character and sufferings from her past that strengthened her will and ability to move on with life and cope with urbanisation/changes. Correspondingly, the support of her children and family togetherness also helped her to adapt to new surroundings as demonstrated in moving her belongings to another flat and having her grandchild call her from overseas.

Select Two stories in which the is conflict between parent and child, and show how far there is some resolution of these differences at the end of the story?

Lee

.Another conflict is when Lee suddenly asked”How come you never wrote this is an internal conflict. This made him feel uneasy as he himself did not know why he didn’t write to Lee.Another external conflict is when Dad said”Do you have to dress like that? This made Lee lose her temper. Maybe she reacted this way because she still cannot accept the culture

With reference to suitable stories, discuss how far change is shown to be either welcomed or feared?

Hamid and the hand of fate

In the story, Hamid and the hand of fate. Change is welcome to the full extent. Hamid from the start was not popular in his community. But when he had the accident where he lost his hand, he was given a sum of $80 000 for his injury. After he was given the money, he became popular in his community. That is how change is welcomed in the story, Hamid and the hand of fate.

How are young people and their ideals presented in 2 or 3 stories in the collection? How far do you identify with these young people?

Evening under frangipani

Elaine's and PrakashThier ideal is their love among each other and the way they view each other. In my opinion, they are presented as the main characters in the story. In the story, they had problems with each other maybe similar to typical problems in singapore.

History of tea

The ideal presented is the story of Beverly. She is presented in a particular manner from her family tree. Beverly is a mix a race, and she has alot of problems in her life. The way she handles tea is one of the example that shows how she is presented in the story, that links with the story, history of tea.

Choose two stories that reveal the thinking of an older generation of Singaporean. What new insight have you gained from such a revelation.

The two stories are, Tanjong Rhu and A Dream Of China. In the story Tanjong Rhu, Mr Li's mother is very religious and She always recalls everything about the past. Remembering the good times she had with her son and her husband in the past when they were still living in Tanjong Rhu. In the story of A Dream Of China, the author's father also likes to recall everything about the past. He also remembers all the good things about China and tells stories of China to all his children of how great China was and still is. The older generation of Singaporean find it difficult to let go of their past.
