Literature: OFF CENTRE Qn. 1-6

Questions 1-6 Off centre guidebook

Q1) In your opinion, how key is the parent-child relationship to Vinod's inevitable end?

In the play off centre, we can see how parent-child relationships affect Vinod. Vinod feel like he is no getting the attention he yearns for from his parents, he tells Saloma how that his parents are never around and how they don't care about him and that he has a mental illness. He says that because his parents have high profile jobs, thay are very busy with their work, so, they have no time for him. Besides taking the pills, family support is also important to ensure that Vinod recovers from his mental illness. Without the support from his family, it was difficult for Vinod to recover from his mental illness and accept that he is mentally ill. Thus, this is what led to Vinod's inevitable end

Q2) `Vinod's high expectations of himself caused his downfall.' To what extent do you agree with this analysis of Vinod's predicament and tragedy

To a large extent, I agree that Vinod's high expectations of himself caused his downfall. In the play, Vinod sees Saloma as a lost kitten that he has to protect. In other words, he sees himself as Saloma's guardian. Vinod does not believe that he is mentally ill and he tells Saloma not to take the pills. As Vinod is well educated, he thinks that the pills do not cure them from their mental illness. Instead, he thinks that the pills make them worse because when he takes the pills, he starts to shiver. As a result of not taking the pills, his mental illness worsen in time and this is what led to his death. This shows how Vinod's high expectations of himself caused his downfall.

Q3) Discuss the reasons for Saloma's transformation in the play.

In the play, we see Saloma transforming drastically. For example, near the end of the play we can see that she is on the road to recover from her mentall illness. In the start of the play, our first impression of Saloma is that she is a shy person and just follows what others say. Also, it was Vinod, at the start of the play who was 'stronger' not Saloma. But as the play proceeds on, we can see that Saloma is getting 'stronger' and it is Vinod who is getting weaker. This shows the transformation that Saloma has gone through in the play. Some reasons for Saloma's transformation is because of her constant determination to cure her of her mental illness and also because of other characters in the play, like Mak, Emily and Vinod. These three characters are the three main characters that is the reason or Saloma's transformation. In my opinion, i think that Emily has played a major role in Saloma's transformation. She taught Saloma to be independant and gave her courage to connect back to the public.

Q4) "Though a minor role in the play, the character of Razali is key to the plot of Off Centre ." To what extent do you agree with this assessment?

I agree to a certain extent that Razali is a key to the plot of off centre. Razali is first introduced near the climax of the play, he is the security guard at Vinod's block. Vinod and Saloma see him as their 'bapak' or their guardian who protects them from any harm. In the climax where the robbery took place, Razali was not there and Vinod has another mental breakdown. This caused them to lose their trust in Razali. With Razali, Vinod and Saloma felt like they still had hope to get accepted by society, but because of the robbery all of that changed. Vinod felt like there was nobody to protect him. Although not much is said about Razali in the play, he plays a key role to the plot of off centre because his character is introduced in the climax of the play.

Q5) "Datta, Dayadhvam, Damyatta" means to "Give, Sympathise, Control." How did the major characters in the play exert control in their environment and/or in their lives? Support your answer with evidence from the text.

One main character in the play who exert control in their environment and/or in their live in my opinon is Emily. Saloma was very close with Emily, Emily made Saloma feel safe around her and gave her encouraging words like "I am strong, nothing can destroy me" and ''They are jealous, because I am special." These words of encouragement gave Saloma courage to stand up for her own rights. Emily was patient with Saloma, that is why Saloma feels comfortable around her as Saloma thinks that Emily can help her recover. This shows how a mjor character in the play ho exert control in their environment and/or in their live.

Q6) Based on the text Off Centre, discuss how peer acceptance and family support are vital to social status and mental well-being.

Peer acceptance and family support are especially vital to social status and mental well-being. Other than taing the pills. peer acceptance and family support are vital as without them, it will be difficult for Saloma and Vinod to recover from their mental illness and if they do not get well, they may not get accepted by society. That is why peer acceptance and family support are vital. At the end of the play. we can see that Saloma is on her way to recovery as she has taken the pills and the determination and the support from her peers and her family. Unike Vinod, who at the end of the play, he commited suicide. Vinod felt like Saloma had abandoned him so he felt alone as Saloma was the only person there for him, he had no one else to go to except for Saloma. That is why Vinod commited suicide. This shows how peer acceptance and family support are vital to social status and mental well being.

"They are jealous... because I am special." Act 2, Scene 2 pg 55

A Dream of China

1)I think the reference to Singapore as a "diamond city" is not appropriate, he said that to show how Singapore looks compared to China. If i were to describe my feelings towards Singapore, it would be clean, modern and friendly.

2)I think her uncle behaved in that manner because he was thirsty, but he was being rude andd unappreciative.I feel sorry for her uncle as he does not even have money to buy food.

3)I do find it a contradiction. This i because, she said she felt alienated n China, but she was eager to listen to her father's stories of the most beautiful of beautiful lands.

4)The narrator meant by his first statement is that even though the country may have everything, it will not prosper if things are not done properly.I agree that her father is a good man, eventhough her father left China,he is still loyal to China.I think Singapore should claim him for its own.

Tanjong Rhu

1)I think the respective authors use these traditional Chinese rituals for more profound purposes.Like in the story Tanjong Rhu,the authors use traditional chinese rituals to show how Mrs Li is religious and her characteristics.

2)I see myself as a modern young singaporean, and i think that such cultural rituals in todays society is still necessary as it allows us to still be in touch with our cultute and our heritage. As Singapore is developing very fast, we need to keep up or we will be left behind. But we must also not forget our culture and our heritage.

3)I think that the elderly in Singapore today are not totally out of touch with the contemporary world.Elderly people will only wish for happiness.

4)Looking back at the past is a good thing, by looking back, you won't repeat your past mistakes. However looking back at the past can become a negative habit. You can get left behind and you will never accept anything as you always look back at the past.

Homework
How is motherhood presented in any two or three stories in the collection?
Tanjong rhu

In this story, is the relation between Mr li and his mother. Mr li's mother depended on him. As motherhood, her son offered her glasses. It's a sign or inherent worthiness, justiness or goodness that is obvious. Her sufferings is somehow wanted to be eased by her son.

The Move

It is the essence of Madam Teo's character and sufferings from her past that strengthened her will and ability to move on with life and cope with urbanisation/changes. Correspondingly, the support of her children and family togetherness also helped her to adapt to new surroundings as demonstrated in moving her belongings to another flat and having her grandchild call her from overseas.

Select Two stories in which the is conflict between parent and child, and show how far there is some resolution of these differences at the end of the story?

Lee

.Another conflict is when Lee suddenly asked”How come you never wrote this is an internal conflict. This made him feel uneasy as he himself did not know why he didn’t write to Lee.Another external conflict is when Dad said”Do you have to dress like that? This made Lee lose her temper. Maybe she reacted this way because she still cannot accept the culture

With reference to suitable stories, discuss how far change is shown to be either welcomed or feared?

Hamid and the hand of fate

In the story, Hamid and the hand of fate. Change is welcome to the full extent. Hamid from the start was not popular in his community. But when he had the accident where he lost his hand, he was given a sum of $80 000 for his injury. After he was given the money, he became popular in his community. That is how change is welcomed in the story, Hamid and the hand of fate.

How are young people and their ideals presented in 2 or 3 stories in the collection? How far do you identify with these young people?

Evening under frangipani

Elaine's and PrakashThier ideal is their love among each other and the way they view each other. In my opinion, they are presented as the main characters in the story. In the story, they had problems with each other maybe similar to typical problems in singapore.

History of tea

The ideal presented is the story of Beverly. She is presented in a particular manner from her family tree. Beverly is a mix a race, and she has alot of problems in her life. The way she handles tea is one of the example that shows how she is presented in the story, that links with the story, history of tea.

Choose two stories that reveal the thinking of an older generation of Singaporean. What new insight have you gained from such a revelation.

The two stories are, Tanjong Rhu and A Dream Of China. In the story Tanjong Rhu, Mr Li's mother is very religious and She always recalls everything about the past. Remembering the good times she had with her son and her husband in the past when they were still living in Tanjong Rhu. In the story of A Dream Of China, the author's father also likes to recall everything about the past. He also remembers all the good things about China and tells stories of China to all his children of how great China was and still is. The older generation of Singaporean find it difficult to let go of their past.
